They need to know how valuable your time and attention are and that it is a great gift when you give them both.
That’s why you need to make the deal clear from the start. Or, to put it less harshly: You have to let the other person know what you consider the basis of a good relationship. By the way, you do this intuitively in love relationships. Do it in other relationships too:
Speak clearly to the people you want to have in your network. Tell them that you will support them if you can, but that you expect the same from them.
